This is the largest and most recognizable field headquarters of Adolf Hitler, which was in use from 1941 to 1945. The Wolf's Lair is located in Gierłoż near Kętrzyn and today, despite the fact that the headquarters was blown up by retreating Germans – it is a great tourist attraction, visited by almost a quarter of a million tourists annually. The bunkers still hold many mysteries and impress with their size, scale, and solidity.
Adolf Hitler spent a total of 800 days here, from where Operation Barbarossa (the attack on the USSR) was coordinated and key decisions were made in managing the German war machine. Among others, Hermann Goering, Martin Bormann, Wilhelm Keitel, and Alfred Jodl also had their headquarters here. It was also the site of one of the many assassination attempts on Hitler’s life – carried out by Claus von Stauffenberg in July 1944. Discover the history and specifics of the Führer's Headquarters in Gierłoż and learn how it was created and what fate befell it after the war.
