Boyen Fortress in Giżycko was built between 1843 and 1855 as a facility blocking the strategic isthmus between lakes Niegocin and Kisajno. At the beginning of April 1843, King Frederick William IV ordered the start of the fortress's construction. A plan was developed to build an earth-and-masonry hexagonal blocking fort directly near the town on the so-called Giżycko Island.
