Active recreation in Masuria – how to organize your vacation?

19.08.2022

Maybe not necessarily today or tomorrow, but you have to go on vacation to Masuria. Especially if we are supporters of varied attractions and we cannot sit still for too long.

And if we also have a passion for nature and fishing is our second name, because the water environment has no secrets to us, it’s time to take out a notebook and start planning. We need to have a good plan, so that we do not miss anything, and since there are many attractions, we should try to see it all.

Accommodation for a good start

Once we’re done warming up in the form of a drawn up plan, it’s time to start with the accommodation. And the place should be a good starting point. By the way, it is good if it will be a source of nutritious, healthy meals and will take care of our body exposed to wind, sun and physical effort every day. The St. Bruno Hotel is located in Gizycko, in the heart of Masuria. It is close to lakes, monuments, bicycle routes. The hotel also offers very good cuisine, but above all, it is an opportunity for evening relaxation and tranquility in the pool, sauna or Jacuzzi. In the Spa & Wellness area you can choose from a wide range of treatments to regain vitality. In activity it is important to have balance, which allows you to avoid overexertion. So what to do after the start?

First lap – a warm-up

The trails around Giżycko are waiting and calling for all those willing to go trekking or cycling. There are quite a lot of them and everyone will find something for himself, because the length of the route oscillates between 3 and 140 km. If you don’t plan to go on a rampage right away, it will be a good start to your vacation. Along the Niegocin Lake, Boczne Lake and Jagodne Lake you will reach Mikołajki. On the way on this trail you will pass through the bird sanctuary and a viewpoint in the form of a bridge in the village of Rydzewo. This route is about 30 km. For the more adventurous we recommend the 70-kilometre route leading through Świdry, Pieczarki, Pozezdrze to Sztynort, where you can visit the palace from the 17th century. Further on, in the direction of Gierloz, you can visit Wilczynski Szaniec, Adolf Hitler’s headquarters, and from there return to Giżycko via the settlement of Piękna Gora

For bird lovers, there will also be a route leading through the ornithological reserve in Kożuchy and the ostrich farm in Sucholaski. This 70-kilometer trail leads from Giżycko through Upałty, Wydminy and Rydzewo. Tours of this type are always an opportunity to admire picturesque landscapes, but it will also be a foretaste of contact with water, which we only admire today, but we will land in it tomorrow.

The finish line is far away, the water is near

Masuria has water at your fingertips, and Gizycko itself has the largest number of lakes around, which makes it all the more attractive to stay overnight in this town. First thing in the morning, we set off on a canoeing trip. We have a choice of equipment – from one-person canoes to three-person ones, as well as routes and duration of the trip. Perhaps if we go with a child, a 2-3 hour trip will be enough, but for those who are more adventurous there are also routes tens of kilometres long. Many canoeing trips start from Krutyń or Ukta. It is impossible to describe the sights and sounds of nature that our senses will experience during such a day. Rafting trips down the Sapina River between Gizycko and Wegorzewo are the most recommended by tourists in this respect. But the waters do not end there.

With the sail to the finish line

As befits the Land of Great Lakes, Masuria cares for sailing enthusiasts. That is why many yachts and sailboats can be found on the Lakes routes, especially in summer. On the route from Giżycko to Mikołajki we will see Lake Niegocin, Lake Kotek Wielki, Lake Szymon, Tałty, Kula, Mioduński, Lelecki and Tałteński canals. The trail is almost 40 km long and the views are impressive . From Giżycko, we will also sail along a 25-kilometer route to Węgorzewo, and here, in addition to Lake Niegocin, we will also see Lake Kisajno, Dargin and Mamry, but not only water points are waiting for us, there will also be islands and nature reserves: Duży Ostrów, Sosnowy Ostrów, Kiermuza or Dębowa Górka. You can swim endlessly, as long as you have something and with whom, and there is no shortage of equipment in Masuria, as well as licensed guides. What about the finish line?

The finish line will be our start, which means relaxing in the pool or jacuzzi with a glass of wine and memories saved on hundreds of photos. And in our heads we can already make new plans, because it is clear that we will return here. Maybe not today, not tomorrow, but we will definitely come back.
