A wedding is usually a several-hour-long event that requires the right musical setting to be considered successful. “Prawy do lewego,” “Przez twe oczy zielone,” or “Y.M.C.A.” are standard songs played by most bands at weddings.
Of course, we can choose, but the selection is often limited because no one knows everything. It’s different with a DJ, who, playing music from records, can reach for anything that we or our guests like. However, it won’t be live music. What should you choose for your wedding?
The answer to this question explains why so much music from the 60s, 70s, or 80s is played at weddings. If it were only about the newlyweds, they could create a list of their favorite songs and choose a DJ. However, our guests might have a wide age range, and we want everyone to have a good time. Limiting ourselves to a narrow genre of contemporary music could mean that a large part of the guests won’t hit the dance floor.
Wedding bands know this, which is why their repertoire includes many genres, styles, and decades from which the songs come. The music is also played in the right order, allowing grandparents to catch their breath between dances. Some say that the bigger the event, the more you should opt for a music band, while more intimate gatherings can go for a DJ. That’s not entirely true; the nature of the event matters more. The more focused on dancing until dawn, the better an experienced band encouraging dancing and offering dance games will be. Mainly seated events, where music should be more of a background, can be sufficiently arranged musically by a DJ.
You also need to consider the wedding style. Club-style parties mainly aimed at younger guests fit perfectly with a DJ. The budget the newlyweds allocate for the event is also significant. A music band is definitely more expensive than a DJ. The difference may be from 1,000 PLN upwards, depending on the event’s size, duration, and preferences. Remember, the more musicians in the band, the higher the price. So who should you finally choose?

Perhaps the competition here isn’t fierce, but it’s worth learning the advantages of each option. A DJ is praised by many couples for a wider range of possibilities. The song selection is practically unlimited, the acoustics problem—sometimes encountered at concerts and live music events—is smaller. A good DJ also guarantees a good time, appropriately engages guests to dance, and costs less because there is only one DJ, who doesn’t strain their voice for several hours.
The band, while more expensive, offers a concert, and live music has its unique atmosphere. A good band means a great singer and instrumental virtuosos behind. It’s pleasant to listen to and watch. However, despite good intentions, issues with proper sound arrangement can arise. Every venue is different, and some factors can’t be predicted. Bands deliver more energy and beautiful sounds, but sometimes human factors such as illness or fatigue can affect performance. At times, due to unforeseen factors, maintaining the right pace for the entire event may be challenging. However, this is expected to be rare.
It’s best to first find the venue where you want to hold the wedding and define the style that should dominate the event. You can then ask for advice from the person or people overseeing your wedding organization and, based on their experience, get recommendations on what would be more suitable and what works well at this hotel, hall, or restaurant. Sometimes a place has contacts with a good band or DJ who have performed there and proved themselves.
