The icy land and winter attractions are mainly associated with highland huts, snow-covered mountain peaks, or for the younger ones among us, the tales of Narnia or the land of Arendelle. Few people think that winter on the Masurian Lakes can also be beautiful, and frozen lakes can be a unique attraction. You just need to dress warmly and head out for an adventure. Giżycko in winter has quite a few for us.

As you know, Giżycko is the capital of the Masurian Great Lakes District. It’s hard to forget them in winter. In Giżycko, the Masurian Ice Sports Center and the School of Water and Extreme Sports operate. Here you will find instructors and various courses related to winter sports. In winter, the Niegocin and Kisajno lakes, between which Giżycko lies, are covered by a layer of ice. This encourages winter activity enthusiasts to engage in their favorite activities. For some, it will be ice fishing, for others skating, and yet others will long for ice diving. The Masurian Diving Center even organizes training at an affordable price. The extensive snowy and icy areas are also a paradise for snow kiting and ice kiting. And speaking of Masuria, sailing never rests in Giżycko. The first training center for youth ice sailing was opened in Giżycko in 1947, and today the city is a leader in training ice sailors. All this Giżycko offers us in winter, but there are also other attractions to choose from. Let’s see what else we can enjoy.

Giżycko on land

Snowy powder covering country roads, forest trails, or hilly terrain creates ideal conditions for cross-country skiing enthusiasts. It’s a sport for everyone, unlike other skiing disciplines, so it’s worth trying it while admiring the picturesque Masurian landscapes. An attraction that equally showcases beautiful views is the sleigh ride. Such horse-drawn excursions are common winter attractions in Giżycko. Organizing such a sleigh ride is easiest by contacting the right person from one of the local agritourism farms. Forest expeditions can also take place on snowmobiles. Not far from Giżycko, in the village of Okrągłe, there is also a ski lift, Ski Mazury Morenowa Ski Station. Here are three downhill runs of varying difficulty levels and a ski training field. It’s safe to say that Giżycko in winter is in no way inferior to mountain resorts better known for this type of activity.

Life in Giżycko in winter

In the same area where the ski lift is located, you will also find the Safari Zoo. It is over 100 hectares of an ecological farm where you can observe animal life in natural conditions. There are as many as 24 species of wild animals, numbering several hundred specimens. Here you will find Greater Polish horses, tarpans, fallow deer, red deer, and many others. The animals live together in symbiosis. The Zoo also offers the possibility of visiting in winter, which takes place by tractor with sleighs or by off-road vehicle. In Giżycko in winter, you can get even closer to Masurian wildlife by visiting riding arenas, where the riding season lasts all year round. There you will find both well-cared-for horses and instructors with whom you can learn, depending on the weather, in the field or in the hall. Classes are adapted to the skill level of participants and take place individually or in groups. Agritourism farms also provide opportunities for refuge and relaxation, or evening chats with the host over regional delicacies. For people longing to escape the urban hustle and bustle, an excellent attraction will be doing nothing with a break for a trip to the nearby forest searching for roe deer, beavers, or moose.

Giżycko certainly does not sleep in winter and above all offers a winter experience you won’t find in many other parts of the country anymore. Additionally, a winter trip beats a summer one because there are fewer people and more available accommodations. The summer season often disappoints when, already in spring, it turns out that the dream places are already fully booked by tourists. And we can also count on much lower prices for a winter holiday in Masuria.
